What to Pack for the Triund Trek

Proper preparation is key to a successful trek. Here's a checklist to guide your packing:

Best Time to Visit the Triund Trek

March to June (Spring & Summer): During these months, the weather is generally pleasant, with daytime temperatures ranging from 10°C to 25°C. The trails are dry and stable, making the trek comfortable for both novices and seasoned hikers. This period is particularly scenic, as blooming rhododendrons and other wildflowers add vibrant colors to the landscape, enhancing the visual appeal of the journey.

September to December (Autumn & Early Winter): Autumn brings crisp air and some of the clearest skies, offering panoramic views of the Dhauladhar range and the distant valleys. Daytime temperatures are comfortable, ranging from 15°C to 20°C, while nights can be cooler, dropping to around 5°C to 10°C. This season is favored by photographers and nature enthusiasts for its stunning sunsets and unobstructed mountain views.

December to February (Winter): For those seeking a snowy adventure, the winter months transform Triund into a snow-laden wonderland. The trek becomes more challenging as the route gets covered by snow, adding an extra layer of thrill to the experience. 

July to August (Monsoon): The monsoon season brings heavy rainfall to the region, making the trails slippery and increasing the risk of landslides. Trekking during this period is generally discouraged due to safety concerns and reduced visibility.

How to Reach

The Triund Trek itinerary begins in McLeodGanj, which serves as the starting point of this exciting trail. From there you can take a short 25-minute walk, take a taxi, or an auto ride to Dharamkot which is the base camp for the Triund Trek and is located 3 kilometres from McLeodGanj.

By Air: The nearest airport to McLeodGanj is the Gaggal Airport in Dharamshala, which is located around 21.9 kilometres away. Upon arrival, you can take a taxi or a bus to McLeodGanj, which takes around 40 minutes to 1.5 hours. You can take a connecting flight from various cities in India to Gaggal Airport, also known as Kangra Airport.

By Train: Pathankot Railway Station is the nearest major railway station to McLeodGanj, located approximately 90 kilometres away. Regular trains operate between Pathankot and major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Ahmedabad, making it a convenient option to reach McLeodGanj. Taxis, buses, and shared vehicles are easily available from Pathankot, taking approximately 3-4 hours to reach McLeodGanj.

By Road: McLeodGanj is well-connected to cities like Delhi, Chandigarh, Shimla, and Haridwar by road. You can choose to drive your car, rent a taxi, or even take a private as well as public bus ride to reach McLeodGanj. From Delhi, the journey is around 495 kilometres, and a bus ride takes anywhere between 11 to 12 hours. Once you reach McLeodGanj, you can hire a taxi, or an auto, or walk from the bus stand to reach Dharamkot.

Day 1
Trek from McLeodGanj to Triund | Descend to Leta Campsite
Welcome to McLeodGanj! Meet your guide at the BhagsuNag Taxi Stand, get briefed about the trail and begin your trek to Triund. On the way, see the BhagsuNag Falls and make a stop at Shiva Cafe for breakfast (at your own cost). Continue your trek via Katrani Dhar and stop at the Leta Campsite for lunch (at your own cost), Then, reach the Triund Top where breathtaking views of Kangra Valley and the Dhauladhar Range await. Later, descend to the Leta Campsite and enjoy dinner before settling in.

Elevation Gain: 2,875m | Trail Distance: 9km one way | Expected Duration: 4-5 hrs

  • Reach the BhagsuNag Taxi Stand and meet your trek leader who will provide a brief about the popular Triund trail.
  • Start the trek towards the beautiful BhagsuNag Waterfall through the dense oak and rhododendron forests. 
  • Make a stop at Shiva Cafe where you can enjoy a local breakfast at your own expense. 
  • Continue your trek to Triund via Katrani Dhar, and upon reaching Leta Campsite, halt for some rest and enjoy lunch at your own cost.
  • Then, reach the Triund top and admire the magical views of Kangra Valley and the Dhauladhar Mountain Range. 
  • Afterwards, begin your descend to the Leta campsite for a bonfire (subject to weather conditions) with dinner, followed by an overnight camp stay.

Downhill Trek from Triund to McLeodGanj
In the morning, admire the beautiful sunrise and witness the magical views of the surroundings. Post check-out, your trek leader will accompany you for the trek back to BhagsuNag Taxi Stand. On the way, admire beautiful views of the BhagsuNag Waterfall. Upon reaching the taxi stand, you can enjoy the rest of the day at leisure, visiting the ancient BhagsuNag Temple, and exploring the local Tibetan market on your own.

Elevation: 2,297m | Trail Distance: 9km one way | Expected Duration: 4-5 hrs 

  • Post check-out, begin your descent towards McLeodGanj, passing through picturesque oak forests, deodar forests, and witnessing the amazing views of Kangra Valley, Dharamshala Valley and more.
  • Your trek leader will accompany you for the trek back to the taxi stand.
  • Upon reaching the taxi stand, the trek will come to an end. You can enjoy the rest of the day at leisure, visiting the ancient BhagsuNag Temple, a popular pilgrimage site, or explore the local Tibetan markets for Tibetan handicrafts, carpets, carvings, clothing, accessories and more.

Know Before You Go for Triund Trek

  • Since its difficult to provide all the facilities in the mountains, one must not expect luxuries. Electricity may be available only at a few locations.
  • Take your time adjusting to high altitudes, as the weather conditions can be different from lower areas.
  • Listen to your trek leaders or instructors carefully for a safe and enjoyable experience.
  • Carry basic medications and a first-aid kit during the tour.
  • No bill will be reimbursed for any missed service/facility.
  • Keep your luggage minimum; the more you carry, the more you hassle.
  • Bonfire is subject to weather conditions and forest department permissions.
  • In case of bad weather or any Govt. restriction, the campsite location might change to Dharamkot.
  • Meals such as dinner on day 1 and breakfast on day 2 will be vegetarian.
  • The management reserves all the right to modify the Triund Trek during any emergencies or natural calamities.
  • The Triund Trek takes place through an eco-friendly zone; we do not encourage littering the local sites or campsites. Travellers found littering may be fined.
  • Children below the age of 7 years are not recommended for Triund Trek.
  • Please note that in the event of emergencies or natural calamities, the management reserves the right to modify the trek itinerary. However, any changes due to circumstances beyond our control will not be covered in the package cost.
  • Mobile & laptop charging points may/may not be available at campsites.
  • Avoid using plastic bags and maintain the ecological balance of the destination.
  • It is recommended to carry season wise clothes and sturdy trekking shoes for the Triund Trek.
  • Please note that this is not a private event and may be shared with other trekkers.
  • Any personal expenses, items of personal nature, meals not mentioned, etc. will not be a part of the package.
